1851: Alresford is an ancient village situated on high table land, 6 miles south east of Colchester, on the road to St Osyth. It is bounded on the west by the river Colne and on the south by a creek running up from the river Colne. The parish is situated in the Union and Hundred of Tendring. It comprises 1,640 acres, mainly arable, the soil is a light sandy loam on gravel. The population is 289. The church, dedicated to St Peter, was built by Aufred or Aufrey de Staunton in about 1300.
