1851: Ardleigh was mentioned in the Domesday Survey. It is a parish in the Hundred and Union of Tendring, 4.5 miles from Colchester. Traditionally, there is a fair on the 29th September. The parish has 5,100 acres and, in 1841, a population of 1,605. The assessment of real property to Income Tax, in 1843, was £8,428 9s 4d. Ardleigh Wick is a hamlet of Ardleigh, 3.5 miles from Colchester.
