404. William Edward BLYTH was born about 1818 in Calcutta, India. He was baptized on 18 Feb 1821 in Fort William Garrison Church, Calcutta, Bengal, India. He emigrated on 27 Aug 1862 to Auckland, New Zealand. William Edward and his son, William Henry, arrived in Auckland on board the ship 'African'. He signed a Will on 19 Jul 1873. At the time of writing his will William was staying in St Aubyns Road, Norwood, Surrey. He was formerly from ____ in the Punjab. He died on 31 Aug 1873 in Upper Norwood, London. He was buried on 2 Sep 1873 in Upper Norwood, London. His Will was proved on 17 Jan 1884 in Principal Registry, London. His estate was valued at £155.13.6. He was a Civil Servant in India. August 1833: William began work in drawing office of Captain James Bedford, Deputy Surveyor General, Allahabad after the death of his father at the age of 15. His wages, 30 Rupees a month, supported the family until his brothers were old enough for employment.
His next post with the Sudder Board of Revenue dispatched him to the Furruckabad Survey under Lt Henry Lawrence. Here he earnt 50 Rupees a month. Aged 20, he was assigned to a survey outside Ghazipur.

1839: William was a Sub Assistant Revenue Surveyor in Ghazeepore (Ghazipur) when he married.

By 1843 William had reached the position of Assistant Revenue Surveyor in the Uncovenanted Service. Pay - 250 Rupees. In 1846 he was sent on a new survey of the Trans Sutlej Territory (500 Rupees).

In October 1849 William was made Extra Assistant Commissioner on Settlement Duties where he stayed until 1857 when he moved to the Judicial Department as Assistant Commissioner.

Jan 1884: Probate of his will shows William to have been Her Majesty's uncovenanted Civil Service Deputy Commissioner of Thelum in Punjab. 1833: Living in Allahabad.
1838: Moved to Ghazeepore (Ghazipur).
1846: At some point during this year the family were living in Allahabad, their daughter Alice was baptised there and the certificate shows them to be living there.
1846: Moved family to Amritsar.
1852: William was living in Amritsar at the time of his sons, Herberts, baptism.
1873: William took up residence at St Aubyn's Road, Upper Norwood, near the Crystal Palace in London.

He was married to Charlotte Matilda CHAMBERLAIN (daughter of Henry de Tankerville CHAMBERLAIN) on 30 Aug 1839 in Ghazeepore (Ghazipur), Bengal, India. William, 21, and Charlotte, 16, were married by licence at the Chaplaincy Station in Ghazeepore. The witnesses were J. Thriepland, J. Delmedick and C. Ann Thomas. Charlotte Matilda CHAMBERLAIN was born in 1822. She died on 21 Sep 1849 in Amritsar, Bengal, India. She was also known as Matilda. William Edward BLYTH and Charlotte Matilda CHAMBERLAIN had the following children:

Memorial Inscription reads: Sacred / to the Memory of / ALICE / Beloved Child of / William & Matilda Blyth / who departed this life / on the 8th of June 1843. / aged 1 year, 1 month and 9 days.

child609 vi. Alice Madeline BLYTH was born on 12 Feb 1846. She was baptized on 29 Nov 1846 in Allahabad Fort, India.

He was married to Sarah O'CONNOR (daughter of Matthew O'CONNOR) on 28 Nov 1857 in St Pauls, Amritsar, India. Both William and Sarah were widowed and living in Amritsar when they married. They were married by Licence. Witnesses to the marriage were Emily Blyth, Matilda Victoria Strawbridge, Frederic Henry Cooper, Minister and Alfred Strawbridge. Sarah O'CONNOR was made Executor to the will of her husband, William Edward Blyth, on 19 Jul 1873. After her death, William instructed that his son, William, and son in law, Edward Wace, would take over as Executors of his will. She inherited the remainder of her husbands personal and real estate on 4 Nov 1873. Her husband, William, instructed that upon Sarah's death his real and personal posessions should be passed to his son, William Henry, and his son in law, Edward George Wace. She died on 28 Mar 1883 in St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex. Her Letter of Administration was issued to Edward Humphreys on 16 Mar 1885 in Principal Registry, London. Edward Humphreys was the lawful Attorney to Edward George Wace, Sarah's son in law. Her estate was valued at £4,059.15.3. Mar 1883: Sarah was living at 10 Gessing Gardens, St Leonards on Sea, when she died.
