224. John BLYTH was baptized on 30 Mar 1785 in St Michael's, Kirby-le-Soken, Essex. He was a Corporal of Artillery in 1812 in Fort William Garrison, Calcutta, Bengal, India.
1818: John was an Assistant at the Lower Orphan School, Fort William, at the time of his first son's baptism.
1821: John was a Writer in the Arsenal of Fort William when his children, William and Eliza, were baptised.
1823: John was a Serjeant in the Arsenal Department at the Fort William Garrison.
1830: John was a Sub Conductor of Ordnance at the Allahabad Magazine when Sophia was baptised.
1834: When his daughter, Margaret, was baptised John's occupation was shown as ' late Conductor'. He died in Jul 1833 in Allahabad, Bengal, India. He was buried in Allahabad Fort, India. He was also known as John Blake. When John first lived in India he took to using the surname Blake. This reverted to Blyth in about 1828.
Aged 16, (c. 1801/1802) John had an illegitimate child by the daughter of a Sneating Hall cottager. John left for London when his father would not let them be married. He rented a room in Ludgate Hill and, during the day, he taught Latin and Greek to the children of local tradesmen.

John signed on the ship "Tigris" bound for Calcutta, aged 21 years, as assistant to purser Archibald McDowell. He jumped ship in Calcutta.

On 21 July 1808 his name, John Blake, appeared on the 'List of Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates composing the Hon'able Company's European Army on the Bengal Establishment'. He used this name to avoid being traced as a deserter. He was assigned as writer in Fort William arsenal for 3 years, then promoted to corporal and appointed as teacher in the Lower Orphan school. John met his first wife, a teacher, at this school.

During the early summer of 1833 John developed typhoid fever and died late July.

He was married to Mary BUTTERWORTH on 2 Jul 1812 in Fort William Garrison Church, Calcutta, Bengal, India. John was married under the name Blake. Mary was from the Lower Orphan School, she was married by permission of Major Wood. Witnesses to the marriage were: John Gosling, Mary Bym and Thomas C. Goddard. Mary BUTTERWORTH was born about 1789 in Calcutta, India. She was buried on 29 Nov 1815 in Fort William Garrison Church, Calcutta, Bengal, India. Mary was 25 years and 9 months old when she died. She died in Calcutta, India. Mary died following the birth of her second child. She was also known as Mary Butterworth Blake. Mary was buried as Mary Blake as she died whilst her husband was still using that surname. She was a School Mistress in Fort William Garrison, Calcutta, Bengal, India. Mary was the daughter of a Bengal Army major. She refused to be shipped back to England for schooling and proper marriage. John BLYTH and Mary BUTTERWORTH had the following children:

Mary Ann was baptised whilst her father was still using the surname Blake.

She died in Calcutta, India. She was also known as Mary Blake. Mary was baptised whilst her father was still using the surname Blake.

He was married to Sophia TUBBS Summer 1816 in Home of Chaplain Thomas Robertson, India. Sophia was 16 when she married. She was a ward of the Lower Orphan School where her husband worked. Sophia TUBBS was born about 1800 in Calcutta, India. She died in Jun 1857 in Jhansi, Bengal, India. Sophia died during the Indian Mutiny.
Rumoured to be the daughter of Lieutenant Tubbs, Bengal Infantry and an unidentified native girl. Sophia was aged 16 at time of marriage.
1850: Sophia was sent to live with her son Daniel in Jhansi.
June 1857: Sophia was slaughtered in a massacre at Jhansi, together with her son Daniel, his wife and four of their children. John BLYTH and Sophia TUBBS had the following children:

He remained here until his early death. He was also known as John Blake. John was baptised whilst his father was still using the surname Blake. John was a weak and sickly child.

child405 iii. Eliza BLYTH was baptized on 18 Feb 1821 in Fort William Garrison Church, Calcutta, Bengal, India. She was also known as Eliza Blake. At the time of her baptism, Eliza's father was still using the name Blake. This reverted to Blyth about 1828.
