1851: A village and parish in the Hundred of Witham and the Union of Braintree and anciently belonging to King Harold II. It is 2.5 miles south east of Braintree, 5 miles north of Witham and Kelvedon. The Maldon, Witham and Braintree railway passes through the parish at Bulford where there is a station. The Knights Templars, who at one time had a commandery or preceptory here, possessed the advowson; it subsequently passed to the Knights Hospitallers, and reverted to the Crown at the general suppression of religious houses. The population of the parish is 560 and the number of acres 2,960. The assessment of real property to the Property Tax was, in 1843, £3,800 10s 9d. Captain Stuart is Lord of the Manor. A neat British school was built here in 1847 by Mr James Joscelyne of Braintree.
