Great Burstead, Essex

1867: Great Burstead (or Burghstead) is a pleasant village and parish a mile and a half to the south of Billericay. The church registers for St Mary Magdalen date from 1558. An abbey of Cistercian monks existed here for a short time. Lord Petre is the principal landowner and lord of the manor. The soil in parts is light and clayey; the subsoil is principally clay. The chief crops are wheat and barley.
