1867: High Laver lies 6 miles south east of Harlow and 4 miles north west of Ongar. The church of All Saints was restored in 1865. The registers date from 1555. In the graveyard is buried the great patriot and philosopher John Locke, who died at the seat of Otes in 1704. The population in 1861 was 471. The parish covers 1894 acres.
