1867: Ramsden Bellhouse is a parish on the high road from Billericay (3 miles) to Rochford (14 miles). The church of St Mary the Virgin is very old, the register dates from 1562. The soil is strong, heavy and mixed; subsoil clay; on the sides of the hill the land is light and gravelly loam. The acerage is 2685 and the population, in 1861, was 430.
