1851: is in the Lexden Hundred and Union, 3.5 miles south east of Colchester. It lies on the Colne and may be called the port of Colchester, as the larger description of vessels here receive and discharge their cargos. Wivenhoe also forms, with Brightlingsea and Rowhedge, a member of the Cinque Port of Sandwich in Kent. It stands on a gentle declivity and commands a good prospect of the river. Its area is 1840 acres and its population in 1841 was 1669. The assessment of real property to the Property Tax was, in 1843, £5,412 9s 2d. A fair is held annually on the 4th September. There is a good quay, and the population is largely concerned in the fishery of oysters and soles. Boats for the oyster dredging trade are also built here.
